Inspired by a painter on television, who moved his brush effortlessly across the page, he began the journey of his passion at age 27. Born in Seattle, he now lives in Sausalito, California, and has a studio, on the waterfront, where he conducts classes and paints every day.
He studied with Rex Brandt, Fred Marshall (AWS), John Ringen, Sergei Bongart (AWS), Robert E. Wood (AWS) and Christopher Schink.
He was a United States Navy combat artist, has paintings in the Pentagon, in the private collections of King Gustav of Sweden and the King of Saudi Arabia. His work is in the collections of Alaska Airlines, J P Morgan Chase Bank, Boeing Company, and Foss Tug Company.
He conducts classes around the country for various watercolor societies. He taught for the University of Washington and at University of Puget Sound.
His philosophy is that watercolor painting is much like golf, “The person with the fewest strokes wins.” His style, emphasis, color choices, and the way he makes them flow together create a mood. “Watercolor should look like it is melting; it is a fluid medium” he states.
Internationally recognized, he has painted in Europe and the San Juan Islands.
Jerry has been commissioned to do posters for the Bellevue Art Festival, Edmonds Art Festival, Ocean Shores Art Festival, and the Sausalito Art Festival. He has been featured in American Artist Watercolor Magazine (Fall of 2000), and on the cover (Spring 2006). The book, Color & Light for the Watercolor Painter, by Christopher Schink includes examples of his work, as does a book called “Splash ~ The Best of Watercolor” (2008).
He is currently in the process of writing his own book on watercolor fundamentals and has instructional DVD's for sale.
